Bora Bora theater of war

That World War II made it this far, in the middle of nowhere in the Pacific, is almost unbelievable.
Nevertheless, until the end of the war in 1945, Bora Bora was a supply base for the US Navy and Air Force.
Up to 1946 there were up to 6000! GIs stationed.
When they left, they (apart from probably a few children ;o) left behind the oversized airstrip and several huge cannons against Japanese attackers.

The airstrip is now used for tourism.
The cannons have had their day and are rusting lonely on their old location.
